Internship Year Courses at Michigan State University: 2008-2009
My internship experience through Michigan State University is one that I will never forget. It spanned over a two semester period, which gave me the opportunity to be a part of a classroom for almost an entire school year from start to finish. I was placed in a 4th grade classroom at Lewton Elementary school located in Lansing, Michigan. I worked closely with my cooperating teacher throughout the year to plan and implement various units in social studies, science, math, and reading, based on curriculum standards, while also keeping up with student records, data, and classroom management. My graduate classes gave me the tools that I needed in order to plan and implement my units of study, and collect data on my students in order to begin thinking about best practices and meeting the needs of individual students.

CEP883: Psychology of Classroom Discipline, Instructor: E. Oka, A. Fedewa
During this course, we studied different management strategies that come from research-based studies and programs. Within this course we looked closely at individual case studies of students and discussed what management strategies would work best for those students. We also worked on a Management Plan for our final project based on ideas we learned from course readings and what we wanted to do for our individual classrooms. I felt that this course helped me develop more strategies to manage the behavior in my classroom, while also helping me to understand my students' individual behavior. I learned many record keeping strategies to track behavior to think about the best way to make that individual students become successful.

This class taught me how to reach students by using various motivational strategies depending their individual needs and personal situations. During this class we took a look a various types of learning styles, behaviors, and special needs that affect a child's motivation to learn. We studied cases of individual student situations and worked within a small team to develop a best practice that would reach that individual child based on our course readings. We discovered just how important intrinsic motivation is and a child's belief in their self and ability to learn is in their desire to succeed.

TE842: Elementary Reading Assessment and Instruction, Instructors: M. Block, R Stanulis
This course introduced me to many different forms of reading assessment. We studied specific assessments that are beneficial to diagnose and assess different areas under the literacy umbrella. We also worked on a "focus project" throughout the semester that required us to pick an area in reading assessment that would like to learn more about for our own classrooms. The area that I chose to study was assessment in vocabulary. I studied the 6 strategies of Robert Marzano and created a presentation of how his 6 strategies of teaching and assessing vocabulary are best practices in the classroom with all types of learners.

TE838: Children's Literature and Film, Instructor: L. Apol
This course gave me the opportunity to dig up and analyze films and books that I had not seen or read in years! We studied variety of books and films including Charlotte's Web, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Jumanji, and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, to discover how a film version is different or similar to its original text form. This course showed me that film is not only a form of entertainment, but it is an interpretation of a written work whether it be a novel or a screenplay, and it is an art form all in itself. We also discussed how films affect children's viewpoints and ideas about certain stories and texts, and how filmmakers create an on-screen story that must both entertain, yet stay somewhat true to the story's original form.

ED870: Capstone Seminar, Instructors: J Rosenberg, A. Zellner, M. Koehler
Capstone Seminar is my final course in the Masters in the Art of Education Program. In this class, I had the opportunity to reflect on my work as a graduate student and think about how I have grown as both an educator and an individual throughout this program. To display my work and reflections, I have created this online portfolio that showcases not only who I am as a learner, but my experiences and thoughts as an educator in the teaching field. It also has called for me to explore what my future goals are as a learner and an educator.
